It has to be said...

...my thoughts on the ongoing unfair treatment of BIPOC

I debated whether or not to make a statement. Didn't want to be seen as 'jumping on the bandwagon'. But I cannot shake what is happening in the States, Canada, and in the world in regards to blatant inequality for BIPOC. So here it is. I'm just going to literally speak/ type my mind.

Why is this STILL happening? It is enraging! I'm enraged. Then I think, I am a white woman, very privileged and fortunate....WHY? because I was lucky enough to be born white. It's so ridiculous. I can't stop imagining if I am feeling this rage and dismay, how do the Black, Indigenous, Asian, and other targeted minorities feel to live this reality every day?

The last few weeks have really been eye opening. I've learned how black moms have to teach their children to be extra careful out there. Especially a newly licensed black boy, having to be trained how to behave if ever pulled over by the Police. Even if they do behave and have done nothing wrong, the danger is real I never really thought about it from a mom's point of view. Hearing their stories and experiences breaks my heart.

I truly feel and hope that this is a turning moment of major change in the world. Enough is enough. I, myself am going to be extra self aware to undo any unconscious bias and to try to understand, empathize with, and give my utmost support to this extremely important cause.

In fact I want to learn more, tell stories with my camera and spread even more awareness from an intimate point of view from our neighbours right here in PEI. If you are a BIPOC living here in PEI and have a story to tell and would like to be photographed I would love to take your portrait and interview you and share your experiences. Please feel free to contact me by phone 902 894-7141 or email louise@lightandvision.com If I get enough interest to do a book or gallery show the proceeds would be donated to the cause.
