Professional Photographers of Canada Atlanic Competition and Convention
Ahhh finally a few moments to catch my breath! I just returned from experiencing my tenth Atlantic Photographic Convention!! Ten years ago I went to Moncton all by myself and didn't know anyone. Very quickly I was made to feel a part of them and have made such amazing friendships and learned so much through attending the many educational seminars.
A big part of the conventions is the Image Salon (formerly known as the 'Print Salon'). A panel of 5 judges regional and national sit in a row in a darkened room and judge the work. Very intense!! They are rated Unaccepted Accepted Merit or Excellent. When the judges score varies they discuss and try to convince the others to go up or come down. The images are anonymous and if they know the maker they cannot judge it. It is open to the public.
I have been entering competition for about 8 years now and always attend the judging. Such an educational experience and yes sometimes frustrating when you don't agree with them! My heart still beats out of my chest every time my image comes up....such an emotional and stressful thing!!
I truly was not going to enter this year as I was very busy preparing for a couple of speaking engagements but at the last minute put 4 images in. I did quite well but will work harder next time!! As you can imagine it is quite a challenge to select 4 images out of the many thousands taken last year!!
Here are the ones I entered and how they scored.
Holding Back the Tears. Accepted but almost scored a Merit!

'Two Outta Three Ain't Bad' Accepted but they were also arguing about bringing this up to a Merit.

'Cassandra' Accepted but with some work it may go Merit at Nationals

'Eleanore' Accepted then they brought it back after lunch and made it 'Unaccepted'. Needs some cropping and burning. I will choose another image for the Nationals.

Well now I am going to read my notes and take some of the excellent advice and knowlege learned over the weekend!
Until next time,
LAV

Very nice, I really enjoyed
Very nice, I really enjoyed it. Do you know of somewhere I can see more about it?
Like you 10 years ago, this
Like you 10 years ago, this was my first year and didn't really know anybody but knew of many through blogging, facebook and twitter. It was a fun and interesting weekend and I'm pleased to have made the last minute decision to attend after a number of recommendations.
I found the judging to be very entertaining. The debates were awesome and I enjoyed learning what the judges look for in an image. The speakers were also great.
Congrats on your results.
